This post is about an experiment working with Napkin AI, a generative AI tool that focuses on generating visuals from text. For the experiment, I first prompted Napkin to "write an article about how AI can help accelerate the product development process, including ideation, design, and ultimately development." I then used Napkin's interface to generate visuals to accompany its own words. I didn't edit the text of the article at all, and only made minor decisions for each of the visuals—which illustration to use, picking from Napkin's pre-set styles, and adjusting the aspect ratio of the images, but no other editing of the content. It's probably taken me longer to write this summary than it did to generate all the content below.
The main thing I noticed is an extention of what I've found working with a variety of AI tools: it really encourages laziness. Part of the value of creating visuals to accompany your text is to grapple with clarifying your own ideas and how to best communicate them. Puzzling out the appropriate visual that enhances your message is part of the process of refining what you want your audience to take away. I'm pretty sure (at least in this article) the visuals are mostly eye candy, they aren't necessary and they don't meaningfully contributing to the points. That's of course on me and how I used the tool, but I think speaks to the danger of generative AI, both as an assistive tool and for the world of available content.
There used to be a human limit on the amount of drivel that was published online because at least real people had to generate it. But it's becoming ever more trivial to generate content that doesn't have value, flooding the world with noise. Today I still had to take the output from Napkin and format it into our website's CMS, but I imagine all too soon (if it hasn't already happened) you'll be able to set up an agents to completely automate this. I'll be able to auto-publish on any schedule I choose, and without any human involvement, plausible looking posts that serve the marketing goals of our business. But they will just be regurgitations and recombinations of things other people (and other AIs) have already written. When we get there, it will be that much harder to distinguish valuable insights worth reading from pure noise.
Despite the existential concerns I have about generative AI tools, I can see how Napkin AI is a useful tool to create simple business graphics that help illustrate a point. You just have to remind yourself to use it as a collaborative partner that can help with the mundane tasks of drawing and formatting, and not asa replacement for thinking through the ideas you want to present and the best way to get your message across.
